This amulet symbolising the hand is very ancient and was a propitiatory gesture, already used by the Etruscans and Egyptians, to exorcise the spirits of the dead. Coral is a colony of microorganisms living in a limestone formation that grows in the shape of a small tree at depths of 50 to 150 metres.Coral has fascinated mankind since ancient times and its origin has been a source of speculation among early naturalists for centuries. Many believed that coral had magical and portentous qualities and was able to protect against negative influences. For this reason, in Italy during the 15th century, a coral necklace was an indispensable item in the trousseau of young brides from all walks of life. In the 18th century, the first coral ‘industries’ sprang up in Naples and Torre del Greco: marvellous objects that included not only jewellry but also statuettes and the famous good-luck ‘twigs and horns’.
