Coral is a colony of microorganisms living in a calcareous formation that grows in the shape of a small tree at depths of 50 to 150 meters. Coral has fascinated humanity since ancient times, and its origin has been a source of speculation among early naturalists for centuries. Many believed that coral had magical and portentous qualities and was able to protect against negative influences. For this reason, in Italy during the 15th century, a coral necklace was an indispensable item in the trousseau of young brides from all social classes. In the 18th century, the first coral “industries” were established in Naples and Torre del Greco, producing wonderful objects that included not only jewelry but also statuettes and the famous lucky charms known as “ramoscelli e corna” (twigs and horns).
