The pendant has a finish made from the Australian ariki shell .Ariki para (Haliotis Iris) is a mollusc that exists only in the unpolluted sea off the south coast of New Zealand.The Maori have for centuries used shells to symbolise eyes in their ritual carvings.Ariki uses a special process to remove the crust of marine limestone from the outer surface of the paua shell.cThe shell is then polished, cut and shaped for mounting on jewellery. The shells selected for this jewellery are of semi-precious grade.
